Bowies Flat Wetland

Boongall Street, Camp Hill
Date Constructed:2001
Site#:0001
Project Summary: Constructed wetland retrofit
0.8 ha wetland constructed within an existing 2 ha park area. An existing concrete-lined drainage channel was removed, along with some 35,000m3 of earth to create the wetland. Enhanced recreational amenity was a key element of project. The wetland includes extensive landscaping and a boardwalk.
Key Features:
Stormwater
The stormwater treatment train includes gross pollutant traps and a wet sediment basin, followed by macrophyte and open water zones within the wetland.
A bypass channel conveys high flows around the wetland.
Total catchment area draining to the wetland is approximately 197 ha.
Water Efficiency
Provision has been made to utilise water from the wetland for park irrigation.
Performance Monitoring and Evaluation
The wetland has been the focus of substantial research investigations by the CRC Catchment Hydrology, including Griffith University. These investigations have included nutrient cycling processes, ecology and studies of plant growth.
Brisbane City Council have collected inflow and outflow water quality samples.
What Worked Well?
The wetland has become a highly valued community asset and has been used to gather substantial quantities of data on constructed wetland performance.
The project comprised comprehensive community engagement elements as part of the design process.
What Were The Challenges?
Large numbers of birds visiting the wetland have had a negative impact on water quality and plant establishment.
Hot weather furing planting combined with intense rainfall events immediately after construction resulted in some difficulties with plant establishment.
