Entries are now open for the 10th year of the Healthy Waterways Awards, which provide recognition and reward to outstanding waterway health projects in South East Queensland. There are nine Award categories open to individuals, community groups and organisations who are working towards achieving healthy waterways.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary, a new Award category has been introduced, the 7 News – Clean Up Award. This new Award will recognise those community members tackling the issue of litter in our waterways.

Tickets available for 2010 Awards Ceremony

On Thursday 20 May 2010, the Healthy Waterways Awards will culminate in an evening to honour the champions of waterway health in South East Queensland.

The evening will commence at 6.30pm with pre-dinner drinks on the balcony at Giannis Portside. The official Awards ceremony includes a two course dinner and drinks, with a live band and dancing to wrap up the night.

The Awards provide a fantastic opportunity to network with fellow water professionals and celebrate some impressive achievements.

Award Categories

Each category winner will receive a cash prize of $1,500 and will be eligible for the Minister’s Grand Prize of $10,000.

*NEW AWARD* 7 News – Clean Up Award

The Clean Up Award acknowledges efforts and achievements in addressing the issue of waterway litter in South East Queensland and is open to community, government, industry and individuals.

Veolia Water Australia – School Award

Open to schools, teachers or students involved in projects such as on-ground works, engagement with community groups and water quality monitoring.

Seqwater- Rural Award

Open to rural or non-urban projects which benefit waterway health. Entries can include partnerships between catchment and/or Landcare groups, landowners, community groups and primary producers.

Southern Pacific Sands – Water Sensitive Urban Design Award

Open to multi-disciplinary teams, including urban designers, planners, engineers, land developers, landscape architects or ecologists for projects that implement best practice water sensitive urban design principles.

WaterSecure – Research Award

Open to individual students, research institutions, researchers, universities and consultants engaged in research work related to achieving the SEQ Healthy Waterways Partnership Vision. Individual applicants must have completed over 90% of the work themselves otherwise joint applications may be submitted. The project must be at least 70% completed.

BMT WBM – Government Award

Open to all levels of government agencies – Local, State and Federal – not including universities. Entries can include projects undertaken in partnership with private enterprise or other stakeholders.

Brisbane Airport – Community Award

Open to community groups, not-for-profit organisations, community members and non-government organisations. Entries may include projects which have either resulted from ‘ground up’ community action or demonstrate a high degree of participation by community groups and/or the general public.

Arup – Industry Award

Open to projects for work in industry sectors such as development, commerce, manufacturing, fishing or retail groups aimed at improving the management of water or the state of waterways.

CSIRO National Research Flagships – Waterways Champion Award

Open to individuals who have made major and sustained contributions to improving waterways. Individuals can be nominated by either themselves or a third party. Please note – the CSIRO National Research Flagships – Waterways Champion is not eligible for the Minister’s Grand Prize.

Minister’s Grand Prize supported by the Department of Environment and Resource Management.

The Minister’s Grand Prize, worth $10 000, will be awarded to the most innovative and outstanding winner of the previous Award categories.
