Litter continues to rate as an important environmental and waterway issue in the South East Queensland region. A huge amount of rubbish including polystyrene, plastic packaging, bottles, syringes and large items such as shopping trolleys, enter our waterways every year causing real environmental harm.
The worst problem of all is cigarette butts. Survey's show that around 60% of all litter is made up of butts. Over 32 BILLION cigarette butts are discarded every year in Australia. If they were placed end to end they would circle our planet an incredible 16 times. Also,it takes up to 15 YEARS for a cigarette butt to break down.
We are all working on this problem but if you are a smoker remember to always put your cigarette butts in a bin. We recommend you take a portable ashtray or an old film canister with sand in it everywhere you go. That way, if you can't find a bin, you can still properly dispose of the butt and save our precious environment.
The picture collage below is a reminder that we ALL must do more to fix the litter problem, and quickly, to avoid the tragic consequences of rubbish entering our waterways. The pictures show researchers surrounding a poor whale that swallowed almost 6 square meters of plastic.
