Setting the scene
South East Queensland (SEQ) is a special place. Stretching from the Queensland-New South Wales border, north to Noosa and west to the Great Dividing Range, the region occupies 22,672 km2 and includes 14 major river catchments.

The region is blessed with stunning beaches, extensive estuaries and other tidal wetlands, huge sand islands, and many kilometres of freshwater streams, which often meander through urban areas.

Nonetheless, the region’s aquatic ecosystems are under enormous and increasing pressure. More than 2.5 million people live within 50 kilometres of the coast and enjoy a high standard of living within a diverse economy.

South East Queensland has one of the fastest growing populations in Australia. Over the next 20 years the population is expected to grow from a total of 2.73 million in mid-2006 to four million people or more in 2026.

This rapid growth will result in increasing demands for reliable supplies of potable water, increased recreational pressure on natural areas such as Moreton Bay and inland waterways, and greater demands for roads, housing, shopping centres and industrial estates.

Without careful management, this will lead to further degradation of our waterways.
