Litter is a major source of pollution in waterways. Every year a huge amount of rubbish enters the waterways of South East Queensland. This kills thousands of marine animals that swallow, or become entangled in litter. It also causes harm to aquatic plants and makes our rivers, estuaries and bays look dirty and unattractive. According to the Environmental Protection Agency’s 2007 report on litter, Queensland has the highest amount of litter of all the Australian States and Territories.

The SEQ Healthy Waterways Partnership Office coordinates an ongoing Clean-up Program collecting litter from our waterways and educating the public on its effects. The program removes over 150,000 items of rubbish per year. from the Brisbane and Bremer Rivers, and Gold Coast waterways. This includes large objects such as refrigerators, washing machines, shopping trolleys and car bodies, along with thousands of plastic bags, cigarette butts and soft drink cans.

As well as collecting litter from our waterways, the Healthy Waterways Clean Up crew also assist in educating the community at various events such as school visits.
